What is Oud?

Posted on June 3, 2020 by Parfumerie Nasreen

One ingredient that is used in a lot of perfumes is oud. Oud itself is the resin-soaked wood or Agarwood, a dark and fragrant wood, and its oil. Agarwood is formed in the heartwood of Aquilaria trees when they become infected with a specific type of mold. If the heartwood does not become infected with the mold, it remains odorless and a pale color. After the mold is present, the tree produces a dark fragrant resin which is the oud.

Oud is used in multiple items, most commonly perfumes. As a common ingredient in perfumes it brings out a woody and somewhat spicy scent. Some unique scents with agarwood incorporated in them are:

1. Rigas by Parfumerie Nasreen

2. Oud by Masion Francis Kurkdjian

3. Oud Imperial by Perris Monte Carlo

4. Oud Santal by Royal Crown

Agarwood is also used as an incense commonly in multiple different forms. Oud can be burned in multiple forms as wood chips, as oil-soaked burned wood chips, or as a powder. They are usually burned on coal or charcoal piece and produce strong woody notes.

As oud is the resin from Aquilaria trees, the scent of agarwood is different based on the species of Aquilaria trees. Due to the differences in species, there are differences in the scents of oud from different regions. Indian agar is a sweeter and rounder scent, while the Chinese agar is a sharper and spicier scent. Agarwood and oud have been used in both Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for years. It was used to treat a variety of symptoms and regulate the body.

Oud has been used throughout the world in perfumes, as incenses, in oils and it produces very balanced woody scents that will always be great to use.

Methods of enhancing Yoga

Posted on June 22, 2019 by Parfumerie Nasreen

Candlelight combined with the aroma from a scented candle helps the healing and rejuvenating power of yoga.

The ancient Indian healing system, Ayurveda (herbal medicine), uses essential oils and asana (physical practice of yoga) to balance and unblock the body’s chakras, which promotes the flow of life energy. The chakras are the energy centers of the body. Now, maybe the language of the chakras doesn’t speak to you. That’s okay. Modern science has also shown a strong connection between aromatherapy and asana practice.

Yoga not only strengthens the body, but it also calms the mind. Yoga creates an oasis of peace that we can sit amidst all the hustle and bustle. Aromatherapy balances your brain and in addition, essential oils possess cleansing properties. These two together creates a balance in your everyday life.

Choose candles, oils and perfumes with properties that stimulate and enhance your yoga and meditation practice.

Energizing citrus and herbal essential oils: Orange, lime, bergamot, grapefruit, peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary, thyme, basil, lemongrass.

Calming floral essential oils: Lavender, rose, ylang ylang, chamomile, jasmine.

Grounding earthy essential oils: Cedarwood, myrrh, patchouli, black spruce, sandalwood, cinnamon, vetiver.

Aromatherapy can be done by diffusion, anointing or purifying. One should employ all three methods for the best effects.

  • Lighting essential oil candles diffuse the scent and provides the soul with inner peace. Find your candle of peace here.
  • Applying essential oil, called anointment, enhances and stimulates your body and mind. To aid in your practice of meditation, find your soothing oil here.
  • Purification by spritzing perfume made from essential oils. Find your favorite citrus, floral and earthy scent using our scent finder.

Mindfulness and a feeling of balance is created through scents and candles which further benefits your yoga and meditation practice.

Sandalwood – True Essence of a Fragrance

Posted on June 19, 2019 by Parfumerie Nasreen

Sandalwood is a very popular ingredient used by perfumers in fragrances. The process for using sandalwood is long and arduous but in the end it is one of the most distinct and beautiful scents in perfumes.

Sandalwood comes from a class of trees (Santalum). The woods are heavy, yellow, fine-grained, and they retain their fragrances for decades. Sandalwood oil is extracted from the woods and roots for use as a base note in perfumes and as an ingredient in candles and diffusers. Sandalwood has been in use for thousands of years in the creation of fragrances and cosmetics because it has calming and cooling effects.

The primary supplier of sandalwood is India. However in recent times, other types of Sandalwood such as the Pacific Sandalwood and Australian Sandalwood have come to light. Of the types of Sandalwood there are only two, red and white sandalwood. Red sandalwood tree takes many more years to grow than the white sandalwood. Another difference is, the red sandalwood does not possess aromatic properties of white pulp. However, both types possess similar medicinal properties and are used in alternative medicines.

As for the origins of the sandalwood used in perfumes, Pacific Sandalwood is very similar to Indian, exhibiting the same warm, buttery scent, however the aroma is less immediate than that of the Indian Sandalwood. After a few minutes they will be very similar. The Australian Sandalwood has lower santalol content which makes it perfect for therapeutic purposes. This also has more of a woody scent than their cousins from India and Pacific types.

In the perfume industry, Sandalwood is a very popular ingredient for many reasons. Sandalwood is one of the most long lasting scents used in perfumes. It is generally used as a base note for this reason. Because of its natural woody aroma, the presence of sandalwood generally blends well with most perfume ingredients, often being used as a fixative to blend and create some unmistakable wondrous scents.

For those interested in learning more about a sandalwood scent, our store carries some unisex fragrances like Original Santal by Creed, Santal du Pacifique by Perris Monte Carlo, Sandalwood by Caswell Massey, Imperial Santal by M. Micallef, Interlude Man and Woman by Amouage.

Valentine’s Day

Posted on February 9, 2019 by Parfumerie Nasreen

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we have some of the perfect gifts to give to a lover. One of our favorites is a fragrance from the House of Sillage, called Love is in the Air by Mark Buxton. Inspired by the freedom of love, this scent brings a feeling of delicateness. This sweet scent has succulent plum surrounded with hints of citrus and subtle jasmine encircling a mixture of soft flowers, with vanilla and musk blending effortlessly for a smooth finish. As this is a more soft and sweet fragrance, for a more masculine type scent we recommend Lyric Man by Amouage. This unique fragrance has a masculine rose scent which brings a daring, deep version of rose, seamlessly blending with notes of bergamot, lime, angelica, orange blossom, green galbanum, spicy ginger, nutmeg, saffron, pine, sandalwood, vanilla, musk, frankincense to create a classic yet powerful scent. Love is in the Air and Lyric Man are the perfect fragrances for yourself or as gifts to celebrate the love of Valentine’s Day.

Spring Scents

Posted on March 10, 2019 by Parfumerie Nasreen

Depending on the season, people change what they wear, and the same happens with scents. Depending on the person, one might wear the same scent every day or they may switch up scents based on their mood. Every scent evokes different feelings for each person and these scents can affect your senses. For example, citrus based fragrances, especially those with grapefruit, are natural mood enhancers. Richer fragrances, those with amber or patchouli can tend to make you feel more sexy or attractive. Fragrances with clean notes or water-based notes tend to make you feel more refreshed.

“Smell is the strongest of the senses and is best able to influence brain activity. Olfactory bulbs are part of the Limbic system and directly connect to the areas of the brain that process emotion and learning. This is one of the reasons why so often something that we smell will trigger a memory or remind us of something or someone.”

As spring is right around the corner, one of our favorite scents to go with the season is A La Rose by Maison Francis Kurkdjian. This fragrance is made for springtime, it was even released to coincide with the spring season. With notes of Damascena Rose from Bulgaria and Centifolia Rose from Grasse, accompanied by Bergamot, Orange, Cedar, Magnolia Blossom and Musk, this scent carries the lightness of spring and will leave anyone feeling radiant and feminine.

Honour by Amouage is another great fragrance. It is a white floral based fragrance with Gardenia, Tuberose, Jasmine, Frankincense, Myrrh, Sandalwood, Rhubarb, Coriander, Carnation, Jasmine, Amber and Vetiver. The notes mix so well throughout that you get a perfect combination of the effervescent florals and the gorgeous spices that hold it all together.

For a fruitier feel, Meliora by Parfums de Marly has notes of Black Currant, Peach, Red Fruits, Amber, Vanilla and Musk that combine together to create a gorgeous natural sweet scent that will leave you feeling light and fresh.

For another fruity scent, we recommend Amethyst by Lalique. This fragrance is a fruity, sweet and feminine scent with Black Currant, Blueberry, Blackberry, Mulberry, Strawberry, Peony, Pepper, Ylang-Ylang, Rose, Musk, Vanilla and woods. All of the notes combine seamlessly to create a springtime symphony that will leave you feeling soft and sweet.

Springtime scents can add to the feeling of the sun shining on your skin and can enhance your amazing mood on a beautiful day!

Perfume can make you feel unique, sexy, confident, and powerful. What you put on can give you an extra feeling of confidence, or happiness during your day. It all depends on what you feel when you put on a scent.

We at Parfumerie Nasreen are always striving to make each visit to our store an experience, not a chore. We want to make you feel welcome, like you’re a part of our family. Even if we do not have what you’re looking for, we’ll always do our best to find you something you will love just as much or more. We will even show you the right direction for what you are looking for, even if we don’t have it.

We are constantly looking to build relationships, to get to know you. When we know even a little bit about you, we can understand what you might like and show products you might enjoy. We will send you samples when you’re not here to try our new products or something we stumbled upon that we know you’ll love.

Thankfully we’ve been able to create experiences that start long friendships. We love getting to know you, and who you are. We remember you and your special occasions. We remember a story you told us, a memory your fragrance brings to mind. Things you hate, things you love, things you are interested in.

A small number of people we have gotten the pleasure of knowing closely and can relate to their lives and genuinely care for. Sometimes we’ll even call just to say hi, check in on that relative that was ill the last time we spoke, or to see how you’re doing after a medical procedure you were worried about.

We take great pride and pleasure in being a wonderful part of your lives and are so happy to have been able to create these engaging experiences.

There are not many places you can go to, or call up, and will know who you are, what perfume you wear, ask about your daughter’s dance recital, all before getting down to ‘business’. There are not many places that will take the time to really listen to you and actually help you find something, especially a specialized product. Not many places you can go for a learning experience and get more than your days’ worth of “you learn something new every day”.

We absolutely love giving the knowledge you needed to get what you want, even it if is not with us.

There have been plenty of times when I have gone to a store looking for a special product and wished I had someone like me to help me find it easier! I have never been to a store where they remember me and have suggestions for me.

We love creating one of a kind experiences and we always look forward to giving you all the latest updates on everything we know you’ll love. We love making your fragrance experience as fun and easy as possible. We love to laugh with you!

And we’d love to thank you for all of it! Striving to create an amazing experience for all who enter our domain, makes coming to work every day so much fun and so rewarding! In the process, we are creating magical experiences for ourselves as well, and are loving every minute of it!

We continually look forward to you reaching out to us through your calls, your emails and social media, and we love, so much, that you are all on this fragrance journey with us!

Fragrances tell stories. They give feelings, emotions, and memories. The perfume bottle plays a role in this as well. Some bottles are intricately designed, some are painted. Some are so detailed you wonder how long it would take to make and finish it. The aesthetic that comes with the bottle is part of finding a scent. What lures you into even smelling the fragrance is the appearance of the bottle. Some people dedicate their entire perfume collection to bottles, and some keep their bottles for display long after the fragrance has been used up. The visuals of the bottle can help you remember a fragrance you liked in the past and want to enjoy now, and it can help us to determine what fragrance you are talking about.

The bottle itself tells a story too, with collections like The House of Sillage or Bond No.9, the bottle can be a visual representation of the inspiration for the fragrance.

Perfume bottles can be very eye catching, as some are made more simplistically, with more of a focus on the fragrance itself, and some collections have a style true to their name, such as the Robert Piguet collection, famous for their tall, black bottles.

What started the trend of having perfume come in attractive bottles was the company Lalique. Rene Lalique originally started in the world of jewelry and later worked with Francois Coty to develop beautiful bottles for perfumes, a revolutionary concept at that time. Perfume came in ordinary glass vials, and one would have to purchase a separate ornate and expensive bottle to decant their fragrance in if they wanted it stored in a more attractive setting. Lalique also had a stroke of genius when designing a manufacturing process where these new, intricate, beautiful bottles could be mass produced which reduced costs and made them more affordable and easily available.

The House of Lalique is now one of the leading perfume houses with annual limited edition collector pieces within their fragrance collections. Other houses include The House of Sillage, Amouage, Bond No.9 and many more.

Each Wednesday, we dedicate our main post to quite a few bottles we’ve discovered that have blown our minds, whether by being odd, fascinating or beautiful pieces of artwork.

The story behind a fragrance is just as important as the fragrance itself. Fragrances conjure up feelings and memories. Fragrances conjure up memories and feelings within you when you are wearing and smelling them. Some fragrances tell a story, adding an entire new dimension to your scent.

Arquiste, a newer collection, does just that. Each fragrance of their line paints a beautiful image in your mind. It gives you an idea of what Carlos Huber, the creator of the line, was inspired by to create these fragrances.

One of his fragrances, Aleksandr, is a divine fragrance with notes of Leather, Fir, Violet and Lavender. It tells the story of a fiery gentleman preparing for a duel to the death. On a wintry morning, he splashes on his toilette of Neroli and Violet, dons his heavy fir and leather boots, and rides off to meet his destiny.

Another fragrance, Infanta En Flor, is a beautiful powdery scent with notes of Orange Flower Water, Leather and Immortelle. It tells of Maria Teresa, the Infanta of Spain, who is offered to Louis XIV in exchange for peace between the two nations. Another scent, Fleur de Louis, the counterpart to Infanta En Flor, sets the scene again, telling the same story from the other side’s point of view. Two scents of different sides coming together into one fragrance story.

Arquiste is not the only fragrance collection to tell stories. An extremely niche collection, Romea d’Ameor, created by Annie Vannier, shows a rich history of women throughout time.

A scent from the line, The Taj Mahal’s Eternal Love, is a tragic and eternal love. Lush flowers, including the Taj Mahal Blue Lotus, mixed with fruits and green notes place you in the very palace built for Emperor Shah Jahan’s one true love.

Another fragrance, The Secret Heroines of the Tsar tells of Tsar Peter the Great sends his favorite spy on a secret mission to commission a now famous painting, so that he may outdo King Louis XV’s reputation as patron of the arts. Anna, the spy, travels far and leaves such a beautiful scent from her journey behind, that it haunts the painter, Francois Boucher, and inspires his painting “The Secret Heroines of the Tsar”.

There are collections like The House of Creed. While not exactly painting a picture of a rich history or story, tells of the inspirations behind their scents. A celebrity fragrance collection before celebrity fragrances were a ‘thing’, the Creed family would create fragrances inspired by, or created specifically for, royalty and celebrities alike.

For example, Spring Flower was created for Audrey Hepburn. The scent is light and airy as is the actress is herself. You can picture her standing next to you if you close your eyes.

Royal Water was created for the next generation of The House of Windsor; Britain’s young royals; a fresh and light fragrance that emanates sophistication.

Bois du Portugal, inspired by the woods of Portugal, leaves you feeling like you’ve just been on a hike in the Southern countries hills.

Fragrances can even reminisce upon personal stories, created after wearing something throughout a certain time in your life. They inspire the feeling you experience later in life.

The histories behind fragrances are just as important as the scent itself. What inspires perfumers can create new memories and feelings for you.

To start, I’d like to talk about what an incredible experience it is to be a part of the fragrance world. Diving into the unknown can begin an amazing journey, which I have had the pleasure to experience for the last few years here at Parfumerie Nasreen!

Fragrances are so personal and unique. They become a part of your memory, they seep into the crevices of your brain and stay there forever. I’ve heard it said that the link between scent and memory is the strongest of all the links in the brain, followed closely by music. Smell something a relative wore, something you wore back in high school, the smell of fresh cut grass in the summer. Then smell it again in a fragrance and your mind takes you right back to that time. It can be an emotional journey.

Fragrances have the power to envelop us and evoke feeling in us. There is so much to be discovered. So much more than the flavor (scent) of the week, more than your favorite celebrity or fashion designer. The unknowns and up-and-comers can be so much more enjoyable than you could have ever imagined.

In my time here, I’ve come to appreciate what goes into the scent making process. The time and energy that goes into it, what the ‘Noses’ give up of themselves, and enjoy every moment of it. I’ve also come to appreciate things that I would not have otherwise. Something someone else may find “too strong” or “stinky”, I can appreciate the essence of the fragrance and my mind delves deeper into the potential of it.

With this blog, myself and the people involved in the future of Parfumerie Nasreen will discuss all of the ins and outs of perfume. We’ll talk about what goes into it, what to be aware of when trying new fragrances, all the tricks and hidden knowledge we use every day. We’ll discuss new perfumers to be on the lookout for, and all things niche about the perfume world. We will involve you in our passion for what we do!

We welcome you to join us on our fragrance journey!
