Oud Imperium is a woody, Oud, slightly fruity scent created for Men and Women in 2019 by perfumer Christian Carbonnel in collaboration with Steven Gavrielatos of Redolessence.
Review
This scent begins dark and dirty, and may not be everyone’s cup of tea. It has been called barnyard and animalistic. Over time, though, it mellows into a smooth Oud scent and the lighter notes are given a chance to shine. Apple can be felt just under the surface pretty quickly, but after the ‘harsher’ element of Oud calms down, Lavender and Lemon become key players, alongside a gently blooming floral bouquet. This one is definitely worth a try, especially if you have reached the point in your fragrance journey of experimenting with Ouds. It can be worn in an office setting, if you let it sit on the skin for about 20-30 minutes before walking through the doors, and will work well for any time, place, occasion, or setting during the evenings or in colder weather. It will create a sense of comfort and warmth while lounging around the house as well. Though it becomes more gentle over time, it will last you all day or evening. It has been compared to Xerjoff’s Alexandria II + III and shares some similarities with Christian Provenzano’s Oud Al Fayed. Try this sample and let us know what you think!
Inspiration
Imperium translates to ‘Command’ or ‘Empire’ in Latin. With Oud Imperium, Oud takes command of the scent immediately. It is the shining star of this story. Like the protagonist in an epic adventure overcoming all odds, this scent conquers all doubts and builds your confidence, and you can face any challenge your day brings.
Notes
Though all of the darker notes are in the base of this scent, they come to the surface first. Natural Oud and Guaiac Wood are darkened with Nagarmotha and Sandalwood, and a blend of Woody Notes in the heart. A faint hint of Apple lingers under the surface as the intensity begins to wane. Soon after, Lavender and Lemon begin to shine through, adding a gentle quality to the composition. As this scent mellows even further, Jasmine and Lily of the Valley begin to bloom. As the base sets itself, hints of Vanilla and Tonka Bean blend with Musk, giving this scent the faintest touch of sweetness within the darkness.
