Juniper In Fragrance

Juniper, AKA Juniper Communis or Common Juniper, is a shrub in the Cypres family; an Evergreen Conifer.

It is found throughout the Northern Hemisphere in cool temperate regions.

Juniper Berries are the female seed cones, which are used to flavor food, but are most notably used to make Gin.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Juniper in brewing may date all the way back to the early Medieval period.

Juniper Berries are also a note that can be found in fragrances, most commonly in the Fougere family.

In fragrance, Juniper has an Evergreen quality to it, and can be sharp, slightly spicy, Pine-like, and is usually aromatic and invigorating. It also usually has a masculine or unisex leaning masculine vibe.

Most fragrances that smell like Gin will have some form of Juniper in it.

Cade is an oil made from the Juniper plant and can give the same type of aroma as Juniper Berries or Leaves.

Sung Homme from Alfred Sung - This scent has a sweet and spicy Barbershop style to it. Juniper Berry blends well with the iconic Fougere essences of Sage, Oakmoss, and Bergamot along with Pine Needles, Rose, and Carnation. Leather, Musk, Cedar, and Sandalwood and some depth. The end result is a classic and sophisticated, yet casual, scent for Men.

Desired Earth from The Harmonist - This scent uses Cade to add to the earthy blend of Vetiver and Cedar. Vanilla adds a hint of sweetness that cuts through the sharpness. Overall it is a fresh, aromatic, woodsy scent that encompasses the essence of being in nature.

Irish Leather from Memo Paris - This scent is clean and gentle, and almost reminds one of the aroma of Irish Spring soap. Juniper Essence pairs well with the Green Mate Absolute, and the hay-like aroma of Oil of Flouve. Leather and Amber add a little depth to a scent that recreates the aroma of being on a Moore in Ireland as the sun rises.

Elation from Navitus - This scent is super bright and citrusy, becoming almost tart and earthy. Juniper Berry adds to the Fougere essence of this scent alongside Lavender, Petitgrain, Clary Sage, Moss, Patchouli, and Driftwood.

Verano from Ormonde Jayne - The Juniper note in this scent is a little more subtle, as the warm blend of Tobacco, Iso E Super, Suede, and Amber have a nice intensity to them. The Juniper simmers under the surface alongside the citrus notes.

Elysium Eau Intense from Roja - Though Elysium Pour Homme and Eau Intense both contain Juniper Berry, it is more prominent in the Eau Intense version. The added pop of Rhubarb to the blend makes everything shine a little brighter, and the Juniper note blends even better within all the citruses, flowers, and gentle woods.

There are some fragrances with Juniper where it does not particularly stand out, but adds its Evergreen essence to the scent. The ones we’ve talked about here are scents where the Juniper either has a moment to shine, or is one of the main components.

We’d love to hear what some of your favorite Juniper scents are too:)
