The term Barbershop has been around for a long time. 

A scent that is described as having a Barbershop aroma can be described a few ways. One, it actually smells like the inside of a Barbershop; Two, it has a fresh, clean, soapy aroma as if you’ve just come out of the Barbershop with a fresh haircut and shave; Three, there is a clean, soapy, slightly spicy, vintage style to the scent. 

While there are some classic scents that have been around for a long time and are still being made, there are some newer, more modern scents that lean into this profile. This is usually if the newer fragrance is trying to capture the nostalgia of an older scent. 

A Barbershop scent is usually going to be a scent with a masculine style to it, and will usually have citrus notes, Lavender, Oakmoss or Sage, sometimes Mint, oftentimes flowers, with depth from Patchouli, Amber, woods and grasses.

Duc de Vervins from Houbigant - This scent has a more clean vibe to it with Bergamot and Lemon infusing themselves within a blend of Lavender, Spices, Rosemary, Patchouli and Oakmoss.

Eau Sauvage from Dior - This is the original Sauvage scent. The precursor to the Sauvage in the blue bottles. Before it took a turn towards the Blue/Aquatic style, Eau Sauvage is an earthy, citrus Barbershop style scent. There is depth from Patchouli, Oakmoss, Vetiver and Sandalwood, a gentle floral heart, and a bright, yet mellow fresh opening of Lemon, Bergamot, Petitgrain, Lavender and Spices. 

Lalique Pour Homme(Lion) - This scent has a traditional, clean, zesty essence to it. It borders between Fougere and Barbershop, which can be neck and neck in style. It has a mature vibe to it, like the scents of yesterday. It blends Citruses with Lavender, Rosemary, Cedarwood, Flowers, Oakmoss, Patchouli and Amber. It has an aroma like a gentleman who is freshly showered and shaved after a morning run, but the aromas of the outside still permeate his essence.

The Original from Eight & Bob - This one is a modern take on a scent that Albert Fouquet created for himself sometime in the 1930’s. Cardamom and Lemon create an zesty opening, Violet Leaves and Vetiver add a green, grassy quality at different points, Sandalwood brings a hint of a woody element, Amber some warmth, and as the Violet Leaves, Lemon and Cardamom cross paths, they create an almost Minty vibe at one point. Ultimately, it smells like the aromatic aromas of the outside on the skin.

Egypt from Eight & Bob - This scent has a spice element to it that mixes things up. Inspired by the Egyptian desert, it blends Cardamom, Nutmeg and Leather to create a dry spicy element that unfolds into cleaner, almost soapy leaning essences of Lavender, Lemon, Moss and Patchouli. 

Bois du Portugal from Creed - This scent is a modern take on the Barbershop/Fougere scent. Like the name implies, it has more of a woody essence to it with Amber and Vetiver boosting Cedarwood and Sandawood. Bergamot and Lavender add that traditional clean and crisp essence within the woodiness.

Danger Pour Homme from Roja - This scent has a subtle Fougere essence to it with a sweet dry down. It has the traditional Barbershop/Fougere notes of Citruses, Lavender, Flowers, Oakmoss, and Patchouli, with the sweetness coming from Vanilla and Tonka Bean. 

Scandal Pour Homme from Roja - This scent opens with a blend of Citruses, Spearmint and Lavender, which unfolds into a heart of flowers, and then a base of woods, spices, Moss and Amber. A hint of Rhubarb adds a nice pop to the overall vibe. The scent begins fresh and zesty and develops into a modern take on the traditional style of freshly showered and shaved aroma.

Blue Diamond from Imperial Parfums - This scent has an aroma like your inside a Barbershop, but adds a sweet and modern twist. It blends Citruses with Orange Blossom and Rose to create a sweet essence, which blends into the subtle depth of Patchouli and Oud. It lies somewhere between Shaving Foam, skincare or haircare products, and the general aroma of a busy Barbershop.

So you can see that, while a Barbershop style scent is its own thing, there is a variety to what it can be.
