Lagerfeld Classic is a powdery, earthy, Amber scent created for Men in 1978 by perfumer Ron Winnegrad.
Review
This scent opens up rich and earthy. It opens with Licorice-like Tarragon, then feels a little citrusy and powdery with Lemon, Bergamot and Aldehydes, and then Licorice-like again. There are a lot of earth notes in the heart of the scent, so it remains relatively bold and earthy, though not particularly woody. There is a hint of flowers that mellows out any sharpness you might expect, which also kind of keeps the subtle powdery essence going under the surface. There is a hint of a smoky essence, which may come from the Cedar and Patchouli blending with the Tobacco note. Amber, Musk and Oakmoss round out the base of the scent, which gives the overall dry down just a touch of a Leathery vintage essence to the scent…..but in a good way. You can imagine how bold this scent must have been during its original release in the late 70’s. You can imagine this is what James Dean might have smelled like. The cool guy who keeps to himself, wearing his leather jacket, smoking a cigarette, leaning against his sports car, just observing the crowd around him. It is bold, warm, rich, with a subtle smooth quality to it. It might be a little much for the office, though it does become more subtle as it dries, but will work well in just about any cold weather occasion you find on your calendar. Though it only comes in the Eau de Toilette version these days, it will last on the skin with all its depth. It has been compared to Obsession For Men from Calvin Klein. As the first fragrance launched for the Karl Lagerfeld fashion house(originally named Lagerfeld or Karl Lagerfeld For Men, later renamed Lagerfeld Classic), Mr. Lagerfeld wanted a fragrance that fit his personal style; Bold, sophisticated and confident.
Notes
This scent opens with the Licorice-like essence of Tarragon. This essence mingles within the powdery, fresh, blend of Aldehydes, Bergamot and Lemon. Clary Sage and Green Notes keep a very subtle brightness going into a rich heart filled with what would typically be considered base notes; Sandalwood, Patchouli and Cedar. Orris Root, Rose and Jasmine add a hint of a floral thread to the heart, mellowing any sharpness you might expect here. Tobacco brings in a gentle smoky essence as even more depth and warmth comes in from the base. Amber, Musk and Oakmoss create a Leather-like essence that pairs effortlessly with the smoky essence. Vanilla and Tonka Bean bring an interesting smoothness to the finish of the scent. It’s not quite sweet, but smooth like Suede. It kind of creates an essence like a Leather jacket with a hint of Cigarette smoke to it, making the wearer cool and mysterious.
