Scholar’s Mate is a woody, aromatic, floral scent created for Men and Women in 2022 by perfumer Christelle Laprade.
Review
This scent is soothing and smooth. Spices and smoky woods are subtly tamed with a touch of Orris. It is safe to wear to the office, but is much better suited for any occasion on a cold evening. It will bring warmth to any moment, and will maintain great longevity. It is best worn during Fall, Winter, and early Spring. It has similarities to Santal du Pacifique Extrait from Perris Monte Carlo.
Inspiration
In Chess, Scholar’s Mate is a pattern that ends the game in 4 moves. With this Scholar’s Mate, the term represents the idea of camaraderie and the poise held by the players.
The perfumer was inspired by wooden Chess boards, and a Japanese wood preservation technique that uses fire charring, Shou Sugi Ban.
