4711 is an iconic fragrances that has survived for over 200 years.
Its history begins as a wedding gift from a Carthusian Monk to Wilhelm Mulhens in 1792. It was a formula for an Aqua Mirabillis, or “Miracle Water”, that could be used internally and externally to soothe the senses and calm nerves, while providing a refreshing scent.
Mulhens believed in the ability of this health elixir so much that he opened a manufactory and began selling it.
The name 4711 comes from the location of the manufactory - Glockengasse No. 4711, in Cologne, Germany.
Its popularity soared as people were intrigued by something that could sooth and invigorate them in mind, body, and soul.
Though the true composition of 4711 Cologne has been a well guarded secret from the beginning, its main notes tout its ‘magic’. Lemon, Orange, and Bergamot are bright and revitalizing, refreshing the senses. Lavender and Rosemary create a soothing and calming essence, bringing an inner peace. Neroli, extracted from Bitter Orange Blossom, soothes the senses and brings about positivity.
In 1810, Napoleon declared that all formulas intended for internal use were to have their ingredients disclosed. In order to continue to keep the formula a secret, 4711 Cologne began being sold as a fragrance and its revitalizing properties were no longer the main selling points.
In 1820 a new bottle design was implemented, forever changing the way people could use, store, and travel with their 4711 Cologne. The bottle design has not changed since.
In 2003 Procter & Gamble took over ownership of 4711 Cologne, and then Mauer & Wirtz in 2007, with both having helped it to come back into the spotlight. Beginning in 2008, an array of 4711 variations, and ‘remixes’ began entering the world, with the Original remaining as the guiding light.
Its popularity has been maintained for its 200+ year existence, with many people having personal connections to it by family usage. Its versatility has stood the test of time, with its refreshing essences working well for today’s fragrance wearers. It is a scent that can be worn by anyone and everyone, any time, place, or occasion, and in any season or weather.
4711 Cologne is still in production today and can be found at Parfumerie Nasreen in Seattle!
