Fragrance Spotlight: Goutal Paris Eau d'Hadrien

Eau d’Hadrien is a fragrance full of citruses that is bright and fresh and clean, and a little sweet. Sweet like fresh citrus juices.

It was one of the first fragrances released under the Annick Goutal fragrance house, now called Goutal Paris, created by Annick Goutal and Francis Camail. Annick opened her first store in 1980, and Eau d’Hadrien was released in 1981.

Annick was inspired by the beauty of Italy, and named it after the book ‘Memoirs of Hadrien’, a fictionalized story of the real Roman Emperor Hadrian. It is told in the form of letters written by Emperor Hadrian to his grand-son and heir, Marcus Aurelias, telling of his life of war, his love of the arts, and his love and hopes for Rome.

Being inspired by Italy, it paints a familiar picture of the beauty of Tuscany and its sun-drenched terraces and Cypress-filled landscape.

The scent is light and fresh, and feels as if fresh citrus juices are in the air all around you. Cypress adds a crisp and clean woody element, pairing well with Juniper Berries and Musk that bring an aromatic, earthy quality that never becomes too rich, instead boosting the life and longevity of the citruses. A hint of Ylang Ylang adds to the sweetness that underlines this scent.

Being mostly citrus based, it doesn’t have the greatest longevity, but it is an amazing fragrance.

The scent pyramid breaks down as:

Top Notes: Sicilian Lemon, Citron, Grapefruit, Bergamot

Heart Notes: Green Mandarin from Italy, Juniper Berries

Base Notes: Cypress, Ylang Ylang, Musk

Eau d’Hadrien is a happy scent that invigorates the senses, and has the perfect lightness and brightness that makes it the perfect Summer scent.

It has been a unisex fragrance since its creation, but there has always been the option to choose a more masculine or more feminine bottle. It just depends on the style you’re going for with your display.

In 2008, Eau d’Hadrien won the FiFi Hall of Fame award, proving its iconic status.

In 2012 Eau d’Hadrien was reformulated. Only minor changes were made to update this iconic fragrance, but the die-hard fans have been able to notice the differences.

So if you’re looking for a refreshing citrus fragrance that is bright, invigorating, and versatile, you should definitely try Eau d’Hadrien from Goutal Paris.

You can find it at Parfumerie Nasreen in store and online now.
