What is Labdanum?

Labdanum is a resin obtained from the shrubs Cistus Ladanifer and Cistus Creticus, a species of Rockrose. It is native to the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East.

In ancient times, Labdanum was collected by combing the beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had grazed through the shrubs. Later, the shrubs were swept using wooden instruments similar to a rake. Today Labdanum is primarily harvested by cutting the entire bush and using the whole thing within the distillation process.

It is believed that Labdanum began being used in the 9th century in recipes for food and medicines, and used as incense. Today it is mainly produced for the fragrance industry.

Labdanum’s scent is similar to Amber or Leather and is often added to scents with both notes. It boosts the quality of Leather and spices, and is used as an alternative to Ambergris.
