Collection Spotlight: Lalique

Rene-Jules Lalique was born in 1860, and created many astonishingly beautiful works of jewelry, glass, crystal, architectural pieces, and perfume bottles.

He began as a jeweler, taking an apprenticeship under craftsman and jeweler Louis Aucoc. He gained notoriety for his unique pieces created for houses like Cartier and Boucheron, and eventually took ownership of the workshop of jeweler Jules Destape in Paris.

Rene Lalique built his career on creating unique pieces, using unique materials, working based on his passion versus what was popular.

In the early 1900’s, perfumer Francois Coty approached him with the idea of creating the first ever attractive, and affordable, perfume bottles. After this, Rene Lalique almost exclusively dove into glass making.

Houses like D’Orsay, Houbigant, Molinard, Roger & Gallet, Volnay, and Worth released perfume bottles created by Lalique. The most famous is a collaboration between Marc Lalique, Rene’s son, and Robert Ricci, the son of Nina Ricci, for L’Air du Temps.

In 1977, Rene’s grand-daughter, Marie-Claude Lalique, took over as CEO of the company. She developed the introduction of Lalique fragrances, beginning with Lalique de Lalique for Women in 1992. In 1994, Lalique fragrances began being released in limited edition crystal bottles, which are art pieces in and of themselves.

Many of the fragrances take inspiration from Rene Lalique glass pieces, as well as by women and nature.

Over 100 fragrances have been created in 30+ years, many of which can be found at Parfumerie Nasreen. They range from sweet and fruity or floral to woody and earthy, to classic masculine, fitting many styles and budgets.
