Fragrance Spotlight: Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey

Issey Miyake is a Japanese fashion designer who launched his company, Miyake Design Studio, in 1970 in Toyko.

The 1990’s gave way to fresh and aquatic fragrances, which was that decade’s answer to the powerhouse florals and spice explosions of the 1980’s.

L’Eau d’Issey was the first fragrances created in 1992, by perfumer Jacques Cavallier, inspired by the purity of water; the source of life. It fit Miyake’s effort to find beauty and luxury within the essentials of life.

L’Eau d’Issey was a popular choice. It is a floral aquatic scent and is almost the aroma of the 90’s in a bottle. It is fresh and sweet with a subtlety to it that is playful and energetic. It is water Goddess meets carefree summer child. It conjures images of a pristine lagoon with Lotus Flowers in full bloom amongst the Lily Pads. It’s as if you’ve been swimming in the ocean with your favorite fruity perfume on, and then let the sun dry you amongst the scents of the tropics.

Though you will find varying descriptions of the notes, the Issey Miyake website lists the pyramid as such:

Top: Lotus Accord, Rose
Heart: White Floral Bouquet, including Peony and White Lily
Base: Amber, Sandalwood, Musk, Cedarwood

Just a few short years later, in 1994, L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme was launched, and also created by perfumer Jacques Cavallier. The masculine version takes inspiration from the strength of water, balancing an essence of purity and freshness.

It boasts a quality that can only be described as a man in Summertime. He’s spent his afternoon at the beach, and the ocean has blended with his sweat and sunkissed skin to create an intoxicating aroma. It is simple, relaxed, and attractive.

The scent pyramid is listed as such:

Top: Yuzu, Lemon, Mandarin
Heart: Water Lily, Nutmeg
Base: Sandalwood, Vetiver, Amber Accord

The bottle design for both fragrances fit the minimalist qualities found in Miyake’s clothing designs. The bottles tapering to a wider base gives the notion of strength and stability.

More than 30 years later, both L’Eau d’Issey and L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme are thriving and living on as a fantastic Summer scent.

You can find both fragrances at Parfumerie Nasreen now!
