Petitgrain is an essential oil derived from the leaves and green twigs of the Bitter Orange Tree. The same species can also produce Neroli, from the blossoms, and Bitter Orange, from the rinds of the fruit.
Most of the production comes from Italy, Paraguay, and France.
Petitgrain, pronounced ‘Petty-Gran’, gets its name from the fact that it, at one time, was produced from the small, green, unripe oranges, which were only the size of a Cherry. It translates to ‘Little Grains’.
The aroma of Petitgrain can range from Green to woody, to citrusy/Orangey, with floral and/or herbal tones, and at times with a bitterness. It is often found in citrus based fragrances, as it can boost the lightness of the citrus tones, add to the subtle floral components, or add a crisp quality to the woody tones.
Gambit from Mind Games pairs Petitgrain with Patchouli. Lavender adds a hint of a Fougere vibe, while Sandalwood and Amber add a gentle woody warmth. It has a nice zesty quality that dances between refreshing and warm.
Bergamotto di Calabria from Perris Monte Carlo is super fresh and citrusy with a nice floral bite to it. Of course, Bergamot is the star of the show, which is paired with Jasmine and Orange Blossom for a nice floral twist. Petitgrain is paired with Neroli for a nice citrus pop, and Sandalwood adds a hint of warmth to keep things lasting.
Mandarino di Sicilia from Perris Monte Carlo is fresh and sweet. Green Mandarin and Yellow Mandarin create a refreshing opening that is reminiscent of fresh citrus juices. Bitter Orange and Petitrain add a nice zesty pop while Orange Blossom rounds out the sweetness. Cedarwood and Amber bring a subtle warmth that keeps the lightness lingering nicely.
Elation from Navitus is citrus upon citrus upon citrus. Petitgrain pairs with Geranium, Sage, Lavender, and Juniper in the heart, giving the composition a refreshing Fougere vibe. Hints of spices and woods give a slight masculine vibe to the overall feel, and just the right amount of depth.
Eau Sauvage from Dior is a classic scent that is slightly citrusy and slightly floral. Petitgrain boosts lemon and Bergamot in the opening, as well as the subtle warmth from Oakmoss, Patchouli, and Vetiver. It’s not too light and not too warm, but just right.
Renaissance from Xerjoff is super refreshing and bright. Petitgrain pairs with Cedarwood and Patchouli to give depth to the opening notes of Bergamot, Mandarin, and Lemon. Rose, Mint, and Lily in the heart add the perfect balance to everything.
