Sage is an aromatic herb from the Mint family. It is native to the Mediterranean, but large scale production is cultivated in North Carolina in the United States.
While it is most familiar as an herb for cooking and flavoring food, it was used in ancient times for everything from warding off evil, as a diuretic, an anesthetic, and in religious ceremonies.
Clary Sage is the species mostly used in fragrances. It creates an aromatic and herbal aroma, and can be mildly peppery. It is commonly found in Fougere fragrances, and does tend to lean slightly masculine in essence, but can be found in women’s and universal fragrances as well.
With it being popular in Fougere fragrances, it is often paired with Bergamot, Lavender, Mint and soft Wood notes. Some species can also have a Camphorous or Eucalyptus like aroma.
Paragon from Initio Parfums Prives has a spicy, sweet, and clean vibe. White Sage boosts a bright blend of Bergamot, Lavender, and Plum, while Pepper, Sandalwood, and Agarwood bring a gentle warmth.
French Oak & Sage Imperiale from Michel Germain is fresh and woody with Fig Leaf bringing a creamy sweetness to the overall blend. French Sage Oil lends to the earthy aspect, which pairs well with the lightness of Cedar and French Oak.
Velvet Fire from The Harmonist is a spicy, yet gentle fragrance. Cypress and Sage bring an earthy quality, while Tobacco and Oud bring a smooth spicy, woodiness. Tonka Bean brings a hint of sweetness that mellows any sharpness you might expect.
Fougere Royale from Houbigant is said to be the original Fougere fragrance that began the trend. Clary Sage is blended with a blend of herbs and spices, Lavender, Oakmoss, and Tonka Bean to create the classic Fougere scent.
Haltane from Parfums de Marly is more on the woody side, being based around Oud. Oud Wood and Agarwood are blended with Leather, Musk, and Patchouli to give it depth and warmth. Clary Sage blends with Bergamot, Lavender, and Saffron to bring that gentle earthiness, which also lightens the depth and brings a smoothness to the overall composition.
